Dame Patricia Routledge, the celebrated actress best known for her iconic role as Hyacinth Bucket in the classic sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.
In addition to her beloved television roles, including BBC One's Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and appearances in Alan Bennett’s acclaimed monologues, Routledge had a distinguished stage career that earned critical acclaim.
Her agent confirmed to the PA news agency that she passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday morning, surrounded by love.
Among the many tributes, the BBC’s director of comedy praised Routledge for bringing joy to millions, stating she “made millions laugh and left a legacy that will always be remembered with gratitude and admiration.”
Dame Patricia Routledge, beloved for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the classic sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96.Paying tribute, the show’s creator Roy Clarke told BBC News:
"I’m sorry, as I’m sure so many people will be, to hear of Patricia’s passing. It’s a rare gift to see your words brought to life by such a skilled performer. She was a singer, and it showed — her voice was an instrument. On top of that, she was a brilliant physical comedian. With those talents, she lifted my scripts to new heights. I can only salute her talent and regret its passing."
Dame Patricia’s portrayal of Hyacinth — who insisted her surname "Bucket" be pronounced "Bouquet" — made her one of the most recognisable figures in British comedy. The character poked fun at social pretensions and became a national treasure.
"She's an absolute monster and I enjoyed playing her enormously," Routledge once said of the role.
Keeping Up Appearances ran from 1990 to 1995, and in 1996, she was voted the nation’s most popular actress during the BBC’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
Beyond sitcom success, Dame Patricia had an acclaimed stage career, starred in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, and delivered memorable performances in Alan Bennett’s TV monologues.
Announcing her passing, her agent said:
"Even at 96, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and connecting with live audiences never waned. New generations continue to discover her through her much-loved television roles. She will be deeply missed by those closest to her and by devoted admirers around the world."
Jon Petrie, the BBC’s director of comedy, added:
"She was an actor of remarkable range, but her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket remains one of the most iconic in British comedy. She brought truth, precision, and warmth to the role — creating a character who became part of the national conversation: instantly recognisable, endlessly quotable, and loved around the world. Whatever she did, she brought impeccable craft, and in doing so, inspired generations of performers and audiences.
