Tsunami Alert Issued for Greek Islands After Strong Earthquake – Tourists Urged to Avoid Coastline
A tsunami warning has been issued for several Greek coastlines, including the island of Crete, following a powerful earthquake that struck early this morning.
Holidaymakers and residents have been urgently advised to "move away from the coast immediately" after a magnitude 5.9 (later revised to 6.0) earthquake struck at 1:50 a.m. on May 14. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the quake’s epicentre was located 20 km south of Kasos, between the islands of Kasos and Karpathos, with a depth of 64.4 km.
The Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued the tsunami alert, emphasizing heightened risk particularly near Kasos. The warning applies to nearby islands including Crete, where coastal areas are considered at risk.
